Vera N. Koehler, 91, of Port Charlotte, Florida died on Monday, October 3, 2016, at her South Port Square apartment in Port Charlotte following a stroke several days earlier.
She was born Vera Ballard in Mason City, Illinois. Vera took her nurses training at Englewood Hospital in Chicago and began her nursing career in Springfield, Illinois, at Memorial Hospital. In 1963 she moved to Dubuque, Iowa, and she has resided in Port Charlotte since 1984.
She is survived by three daughters – Carolyn Haslam, Gayle Burdick (John W. Jensen), and Jo Ellyn Burdick. She will be remembered and missed by her children, nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, sisters-in-law, friends, and neighbors. Her husband, Fred W. Koehler, predeceased her in 1998.
A memorial service will be held at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Port Charlotte on Sunday, October 9, at 3:00 pm. She requested that in celebration of her life, people wear bright colors to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Pilgrim United Church of Christ or to a charity of your choice. Burial will be held at Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque, Iowa.
