He was born July 26, 1929, in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, to the late Napoleon I. and Yvonne T. (nee – LaBelle) Magnant, and moving from Narragansett, R.I. to Sarasota, FL, finally settled in Punta Gorda in 1997. Joseph, a Korean War veteran who served in the U.S. Army, was a member of the Punta Gorda Elks Lodge No. 2606, and had been a North Kingstown, R.I. Police Reserve Officer for 30 years as well as having served in the North Kingstown Ambulance Corps for many years, six years as the Corps Commander.
He is survived by his son, James D. (Kathleen) Magnant; grandchildren, Jacob C. Magnant and Christopher J. Magnant; a brother, N. Peter (Shirley) Magnant of North Kingstown, R.I.; and sister, Margaret R. Magnant of Lafayette, LA; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family members. In addition to his parents, Joseph was preceded in death by a sister, Theresa M. Pendergast, his eldest son, Joseph N., Jr. in 2004, and his beloved wife of 58 years, Sherrell J. Magnant, in November of 2013.
